President Joe Biden’s campaign slammed Elon Musk after it was reported that he donated to a pro-Trump super PAC this week.
Bloomberg first reported on Friday that Musk donated an undisclosed amount to America PAC, a super PAC that works to get Donald Trump elected in 2024. A source familiar with the donation told the outlet that the contribution included a “significant amount” of cash.
The Biden campaign criticized the donations as “arrogant” and said Trump’s policies would raise taxes on the working class.
“An arrogant billionaire who only puts himself first is not what America wants or needs,” Biden campaign spokesman James Singer said in a statement to Bloomberg. “Elon knows that Trump is a fool who sold out America, cut his own taxes, and raise taxes on the middle class by $2,500.”
A representative for the Biden campaign did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment on Saturday, and Musk did not respond to an emailed request for comment.
Musk’s political donations have been fairly consistent since the early 2000s, and he hasn’t publicly endorsed any candidates in the 2024 presidential race. In March, the billionaire said in an interview that he had no plans to donate to either candidate.
Still, since Donald Trump left the White House in 2020, Musk has repeatedly hurled insults and criticism at Joe Biden, intervening on politically sensitive issues. In 2022, he called Biden a “wet puppet” after Biden met with executives from Ford and GM about developing electric vehicles and excluded Musk’s company, Tesla.
Musk appeared on X on Thursday to criticize the president for mistakenly referring to Vice President Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump” during a press conference.
“Is this for real!!?” Musk said on X in response to a video of Biden’s gaffe.
Musk also publicly defended former President Trump after his felony conviction in May for falsifying business records, repeating Trump’s claim that the conviction was an act of political persecution.
“Today certainly did great damage to the public’s faith in the American justice system,” Musk said in a post on X.
Trump is also reportedly considering bringing Musk on as an adviser if he wins the presidential election in November, and a source familiar with the discussions told The Wall Street Journal that the two men have discussed how Musk could provide input on border security and economic policy.
A 2022 analysis by Business Insider found that Musk has donated slightly more money to Republicans than Democrats over the past 20 years, $574,500 to Republicans and $542,000 to Democrats.
