Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down Boomerang, the streaming service focused on classic cartoons. according to The Hollywood ReporterThe platform started as a digital cable channel in 2000 and expanded into a streaming platform in 2017.
Boomerang will officially cease operations on September 30th, giving subscribers roughly two months to binge watch all of its titles. Looney Tunes, Tom and Jary and Scooby-Dooo cartoons, although some content will be rolled into Max. The linear channel will continue to run through cable and satellite providers, reaching an estimated 26 million households.
Additionally, according to an email sent to users, Boomerang subscribers can continue to subscribe to Max’s ad-free plan at the same subscription price “until further notice.” This is a pretty good deal, considering Boomerang costs $6 per month and Max’s ad-free plan is currently $17 per month.
But Max already comes with a lot of the same programming as Boomerang, including: Looney Tunes A few pairs of shorts Scooby-Doo show, Tom and Jerry and The Flintstonesetc. You’ll also find the entire Cartoon Network catalog of shows and a ton of DC animated series, including: Harley Quinn.
The company didn’t say which shows and movies would be moving to Max, telling subscribers only that “some Boomerang content may no longer be available after September 30.”
Boomerang isn’t the only anime-related streaming platform in danger of being shut down. Closed earlier this year Following layoffs at parent company Paramount Global. On the plus side, Disney+ has a good selection of anime given its history, and the same can be said for Netflix and Prime Video.
