In this edition of “What We’re Listening To,” Engadget Weekend Editor Cheyenne MacDonald shares more about the new releases she’s been enjoying lately.
Francesca Wechsler – I dreamed that I found a red ruby
Sometimes, the algorithm does the right thing for me. Over the last month or so, as I was scrolling through my Instagram feed, a recommendation reel from artist Francesca Wexler popped up and I couldn’t help but get drawn into her mesmerizing flow. Her style isn’t easy to pigeonhole into a single genre, but it would fall under the category of alternative hip hop. She has also described her work as “psychedelic rap.”
Some songs from Wexler’s latest album, I dreamed that I found a red rubyThe songs on this album are almost ethereal, like the opener and closer “Heaven on Earth” and “Moonwalking,” and the bright and catchy “Ain’t I” makes you feel like it’s a sunny day, but there are also darker, harder moments on tracks like “Amphetamine Man” that show Wexler’s depth as a rapper. I dreamed that I found a red ruby. It’s clear that Wexler is an artist not to be missed.
Orville Peck – Stampede
Orville Peck released a full-length album shortly after its release. Stampede: Volume 1 Released in May, the country artist released the full duets album on Friday, and although it’s only been out for less than three days, I can already tell this song will be high on my “most listened to” playlist for some time to come.
Stampede Peck has collaborated with country legends and up-and-coming artists, so genre-wise, it’s a jack of all trades. In addition to the songs I shouted out in the first half, the rest of the album is Stampede They have a ton of new hits out, but some of my favorites are “Back at Your Door” featuring Debbie Dawson, “Papa Was a Rodeo” featuring Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway, and “You’re an Asshole, I Can’t Stand You (and I Want a Divorce)” featuring Margo Price.
Honorable Mention:
Street Cleaner — I recently started looking for music that sounded like something straight out of an 80s horror/thriller movie and was introduced to Street Cleaner on Reddit, and I can honestly say that it did not disappoint. Described on Bandcamp as a “theatrical, filthy take on synth music,” Street Cleaner has quickly become my go-to artist to listen to when I need to get some work done or focus.
Instead of focusing on a specific song or album, I listen to their entire discography and just get in the zone. New Music In April, you’ll find the perfect place to start your musical journey. video gameI’m definitely going to check it out.
