The Federal Communications Commission New rules to regulate the use of AI-generated calls and texts. Part of the proposal focuses on creating a clear definition of AI-generated calls, while the rest focuses on protecting consumers by forcing companies to disclose when AI is used in calls and texts.
“This provides consumers with an opportunity to identify and avoid calls and text messages that may pose heightened risks to fraud and other scams,” the FCC said. The agency also is working to ensure that lawful uses of AI to help people with disabilities communicate remain protected.
Today’s proposal is the FCC’s latest action to regulate how AI is used in robocalls and robotexts. The Commission has already taken action regarding AI-generated voices in robocalls and must crack down on this practice. There has already been one high-profile case of AI robocalls being used against New Hampshire voters ahead of this November’s election.
