While Apple has taken a strong stance on many things, the one they will ultimately have to defend is possibly requiring apps to make purchases through the tech giant, the latest example being Patreon, where Apple announced it would be requiring apps to make purchases. Switch to iOS’ in-app purchase system If they don’t, they risk being banned. Patreon’s purpose is to let creators offer “patron” memberships in exchange for content. Some tiers are free, but creators offer paid options to make money. This change could affect that as well.
Patreon users need to know about two main changes: By November of this year, all creators will only be able to offer subscription-based plans on iOS, as the App Store doesn’t support other formats like monthly or per-piece plans. As a result, Patreon will roll out a 16-month transition process to move all memberships to subscriptions by November 2025. At that point, subscription-based plans will be the only option, an unfortunate testament to the breadth of Apple’s influence.
Apple will also be offering a 30% discount on all subscriptions made on its iOS app Patreon starting this November. Patreon In-App Commerce Purchases Starting in early 2024. Patreon has designed a tool that allows creators to raise their prices on the iOS app and leave them alone on the browser site and Android devices, but creators can turn this off if they want to keep their fees the same.
