The first episode of Netflix’s new true crime docuseries, “Worst Ex Ever,” details the case of Benjamin Foster, a violent criminal who held his ex-girlfriend hostage for three days.
Netflix is a leading producer of true crime documentaries, focusing on brutal murders and bizarre crimes.
Now, the streamer has taken the unusual step of partnering with Blumhouse, the production company known for horror films like Jordan Peele’s “Get Out,” M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” and “M3GAN,” for “Worst Ex Ever.” Each episode of “Worst Ex Ever” focuses on a different culprit.
The first episode details Foster’s pattern of abusive behavior: A woman named Jamie, who dated Foster for about two years, described how he drugged her, shaved her head, held her captive in his Las Vegas home for two weeks, and threatened to kill her.
After convincing them she needed groceries, she escaped and took refuge in the hospital, where she said in the documentary she was treated for injuries including “seven broken ribs, bruised both eyes, bruising all over my body, lacerations all over my body.”
As noted in the documentary series, Foster was charged with kidnapping, assault and domestic violence. He was released from custody in October 2021 and transferred to Grants Pass in southwest Oregon.
Later in the episode, bartender Justine Siemens told how she met Foster while working at a bar in Grants Pass, and after he asked her to provide a clean urine sample in December 2022, she reported him to her superiors, who fired him.
In late January 2023, Foster hid himself in Siemens’ home and beat her over a period of three days, leaving her with brain injuries.
“Torture is an indescribable word for what I went through,” she said in the documentary series.
Siemens was found by a friend who called an ambulance, but Foster had already fled the area and remained on the run for a week.
Benjamin Foster committed suicide in February 2023.
In southwest Oregon, Foster used dating apps to trick unsuspecting victims into helping him evade authorities, and police were offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to his arrest.
According to the documentary series, on Jan. 31, 2023, Foster murdered elderly man Richard Barron and his caregiver Donald Griffiths in their home 700 feet from where Siemens lived.
Later that day, Foster was found hiding at Seemen’s home by authorities, who obtained a warrant to enter the premises.
During the standoff, officers used tear gas and a drone to try to lure Foster out, but soon realized he was hiding under a house.
CBS Foster was reported to have “burrowed deep into the basement of the house. He committed suicide and officers had to pull up the floorboards to extricate him.”
