The Starliner is scheduled to detach from the International Space Station in a few days and return to Earth unmanned, but it appears there are some new mysteries plaguing the team before it departs. On Saturday, astronaut Butch Wilmore alerted NASA Mission Control to an unexplained “weird noise” coming from the spacecraft’s speakers. Audio Clip Shared conversations NASA space flight Forum by meteorologist Rob Dale ( Ars Technical) The sound begins at the 45-second mark and has a steady rhythm. “I don’t know what it is,” Wilmore said.
As Wilmore moved his microphone closer to the speaker, a controller in Houston said, “It sounded like a pulsating noise, like a sonar sound.” Wilmore then let the sound play for about 20 seconds before ending the call. “Just to be sure, this is coming from the Starliner’s speaker,” Mission Control asked. “Is there anything else you’d like to note? Any other noises or weird settings there?” The astronaut said everything else seemed normal.
The cause of the noise is still unknown. The Boeing spacecraft has been docked to the ISS since early June, and engineers have been working to determine the cause of the problem that arose during its first crewed flight. Wilmore and crew member Suni Williams will remain on the ISS when Starliner finally returns to Earth on September 6. They will continue to work on the ISS for the next few months while they await SpaceX’s return in February 2025.
