British housebuilder Keepmoat will invest £83 million in the redevelopment of the former RAF base in Weston-super-Mare as part of wider redevelopment plans for the whole seaside town.
The Winterstoke Gate development, part of Parklands Village, will provide 425 homes, of which 135 will be carbon neutral and the remaining 290 will use environmentally friendly materials.
The housebuilder will also help North Somerset Council build 125 affordable homes on the development, which forms part of the wider Parklands Village development, which is being delivered in partnership with several partners.
John Owen, Keepmoat’s director of land and partnerships, said: “It’s incredibly rewarding to hear such positive feedback from residents and to be able to provide much-needed housing in the area.”
“At Keepmoat we are committed to transforming communities and improving the lives of local people. The Winterstoke Gate development will add value to the area and bring much-needed regeneration to Weston-super-Mare.”
“We are pleased to be able to recruit 20 apprentices during the development of this project to help upskill the industry’s future workforce.”
The redevelopment and extension of the seaside town from Keepmoat will cost a total of £78 million, with a further £5.6 million to be invested in the local authority across multiple services including health, education and local transport.
Located on the edge of Weston-super-Mare, between the Mendip Hills and Golden Sands, Winterstoke Gate is a beautiful development poised to create a vibrant new community, with easy access to schools, supermarkets, restaurants and shops.
Councillor Mark Canniford, North Somerset Council’s executive member for placemaking and economy, said: “Winterstoke Gate is the first major housing project to be brought forward as part of North Somerset’s development programme and it’s fantastic to see progress being made in creating this new community.”
“The homes we build will meet the highest standards of sustainability and energy efficiency, lowering residents’ fuel bills and reducing their carbon footprint through contemporary, high-quality design.”
“We are proud to be working with Keepmoat to provide a mix of affordable and accessible housing to foster a vibrant and diverse community in Winterstoke Gate.
“Building on council-owned land has enabled us to prioritise a strong, community-focused approach to housing development whilst understanding the needs of our residents and developing it alongside other new community facilities such as a primary and secondary school and GP clinic.”
The site has also benefited from £10 million from the Government’s Local Authority Accelerated Construction Fund, administered by Homes England.
