Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney said she will vote for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
Cheney served as a member of the Republican House leadership until her ouster in 2021, when she lost a primary in Wyoming to a candidate backed by former President Donald Trump in 2022. She is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who served under former President George W. Bush.
The former Republican congresswoman voiced her support for Trump during a speech at Duke University, where she described herself as a “conservative” and reiterated her stance that Trump is a “danger” to democracy.
The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.
“I don’t think there’s any room to write in the candidate’s name, especially in battleground states,” Cheney said at Duke University. video It cycles through X.
“As a conservative, as someone who believes in and values the Constitution, I’ve thought deeply about this,” she added. “Because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only will I not be voting for Donald Trump, I will be voting for Kamala Harris.”
Cheney was one of two Republicans, along with former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who served on the congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack, and voted to impeach President Trump in 2021 following the riot.
While she has been sounding the alarm for years about the potential impact of a second term for Trump, her comments this week marked her first public endorsement of Harris.
Cheney warned last year that she had “no doubt” Trump would refuse to leave office if he won in November.
Several Republicans have already endorsed Harris, including more than 200 GOP staffers who worked under former President Bush and Senators John McCain and Mitt Romney.
Cheney’s former colleague, Kinzinger, formally endorsed Harris during a speech at the Democratic National Convention earlier this month.
