Russian state-run media outlet RT is trying to use Western figures to steer voters to former President Donald Trump ahead of the November elections, according to an anonymous U.S. intelligence official. Reuters.
The official said RT, formerly known as Russia Today, had “developed a network of prominent figures in the United States and other Western countries and used them to create and spread coverage favorable to Russia.”
“These actors support Moscow’s efforts to sway voters’ preferences in favor of the former president and undermine the vice president’s prospects,” they added.
it is announcement The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced on Wednesday that the U.S. had indicted two Russian nationals who are employees of RT on charges of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Prosecutors said the associates, who identified themselves as Kostyantin Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva, managed an operation from Moscow aimed at “influencing American citizens by covertly establishing and funding content production companies in the United States.”
According to the indictment, over the past year, RT “secretly funded and operated a Tennessee-based online content production company” by spending approximately $10 million on it.
The unnamed Tennessee-based company was later reported by several media outlets to be Tenet Media, a media company founded by conservative couple Lauren Chen and Liam Donovan.
Among the pro-Trump influencers the company published content on: Dave Rubin and Benny Johnsonsaid he was unaware of Russian involvement.
RT mocked the accusations on Wednesday, saying: “Three things are certain in life: death, taxes and RT’s interference in the US elections,” according to Reuters.
This comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier this week that he would support Vice President Kamala Harris in the US elections.
“As I said before, the current president Biden was on our side, you can say that. He dropped out of the race, but he called on his supporters to support Harris. This is what we are doing. We support her,” Putin told Russia’s TASS news agency.
“At the end of the day, the choice is up to the American people and we respect that,” he said.
