Justin Timberlake accepted a plea deal in his drunk driving case and has warned others not to drink and drive.
Timberlake pleaded guilty to drunk driving, a non-criminal traffic offense, his lawyer, Edward Burke Jr., said. He said at a press conference After the trial.
CNN reports: A judge initially found the agreement to be “surprisingly favorable” to Timberlake, and ordered him to complete 25 hours of volunteer community service and public safety announcements, CNN reported.
According to CNN, Timberlake will pay a $500 fine and have his New York driver’s license suspended for 90 days.
Timberlake acknowledged his status as a celebrity and said he didn’t measure up to the standards he set for himself.
“Even if you’ve had one drink, don’t drive,” he told reporters gathered outside the court. “There are plenty of other options. Call a friend. Get an Uber. There are plenty of travel apps. You can take a taxi.”
“This is a mistake that I made,” he continued, “but I hope that people who are watching and listening to this show right now can learn from this mistake.”
Timberlake also acknowledged that the incident had put a “strain” on the small Hamptons town of Sag Harbor.
Timberlake was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in June and pleaded not guilty at his final hearing in August.
Speaking to reporters outside court, Burke said his client had not been drinking and had “just had one drink in two hours”.
They also said Timberlake had been cooperative and respectful toward law enforcement.
