Former President Donald Trump was shot on Sunday near his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, but was unharmed, according to his campaign and the U.S. Secret Service.
“President Trump is safe despite hearing gunfire nearby. Further details are unavailable at this time,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Chang said in a statement.
In a statement published by multiple media outlets, an FBI representative said the bureau was investigating a “possible assassination attempt” on President Trump.
Representatives for the FBI did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.
A Secret Service representative said at a press conference shortly after the incident that the shooting happened at about 2 pm ET at Trump International Golf Club. Police said at the press conference that the suspect had an AK-47-style rifle with a scope, two backpacks containing ceramic tiles, and a GoPro camera.
A Secret Service spokesman said at a press conference that Trump was likely about 300 to 500 yards away from the suspect when he was arrested.
“But with a rifle and a scope, you’re not going to get very far,” he added.
A Secret Service spokesman said at a news conference that Secret Service agents had opened fire on armed suspects while Trump was on the golf course, one of whom was detained by local police.
“Prosecutors are currently preparing a warrant and a motion for pretrial detention against the suspect,” Palm Beach County State’s Attorney Dave Arenberg said at a news conference. “This will result in the suspect being taken into custody. However, the filing of a warrant and charges at the state level does not preclude future charges being filed at the federal level.”
President Trump briefly mentioned the incident in an email on Sunday.
“I heard gunfire near me, but before the rumors get out of control, I want you to hear this first: I am safe and well!,” he said. “Nothing can stop me. I will never surrender! I will always love all of you who supported me. Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again.”
The shooter has not yet been identified.
The incident came months after an attempt to assassinate Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July and comes as the Secret Service is under intense scrutiny for its handling of an earlier shooting that left the former president with an ear injury.
Senator J.D. Vance, Trump’s running mate, posted on X that he had spoken with Trump before the news broke and that the former president seemed in “surprisingly good spirits.”
Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s Democratic opponent in the 2024 presidential election, said on Sunday criticized Recent shootings.
“We received reports of gunfire heard near former President Trump and his property in Florida and are pleased that he is safe,” she said in a statement. “Violence has no place in America.”
