I had never even heard of an aparthotel before coming to Porto, but once you experience it, you’ll never want to go back to any other type of accommodation.
Essentially, they combine the features and amenities of a boutique hotel with the space and convenience of a fully-furnished apartment.
When I travel solo, I usually choose hotels or hostels because I like having people around me, and sometimes I choose Airbnb apartments because I like kitchens and the spacious, homey feel.
When I checked into my first aparthotel, Village by BOA, I was pleasantly surprised by how great everything was: a cozy, spacious apartment like you’d find on Airbnb, with all the amenities and peace of mind you’d find in a hotel.
Plus, my room rate was about 180 euros per night (about $199), which was on par with what you’d expect to pay for lodging in the area.
The room was very comfortable and the aparthotel had all the amenities.
Village by BOA consists of five buildings just outside Porto’s historic center, surrounded by tranquil outdoor spaces, making it easy to forget you’re actually in the heart of one of Europe’s busiest cities.
Like hotels, many aparthotels have standardized rooms.
The comfortable duplex I stayed in had a large living room with a sofa, a smart TV, a fully equipped kitchen and a dining table. The top floor had a queen size bed and a marble bathroom.
The property also came with common garden spaces, daily housekeeping and other amenities you’d expect from a hotel.
Aparthotels vary, but many offer perks such as breakfast service and on-site fitness centers.
I felt safe and welcome throughout my stay
To be honest, I would have been happy not to leave the aparthotel.
To me, the accommodation felt like a luxurious communal living space with more privacy – I loved having my own room but also having access to common areas that were much more inviting and welcoming than a typical hotel lobby.
As a solo traveller, I felt more comfortable having people around me.
During my stay, I met lots of locals working at the accommodation and other travellers, and when I felt lonely I would take a stroll to the outdoor common area to meet my neighbours.
Aparthotels are set to become especially popular in the coming months. Growing interest in solo travel Throughout 2024.
