Starting today, GM has begun selling North American Charging Standard (NACS) certified DC adapters for its electric vehicles. GM was planning to support Tesla’s NACS connector 15 months ago, but it took until today to bring the adapter to market. Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC models can all use the new adapter.
Previously, GM’s electric vehicles were equipped with a separate, proprietary charging port and therefore not compatible with Tesla’s Superchargers. Owners of those electric vehicles can purchase the adapter for $225 using the vehicle brand’s mobile app, which also helps owners find the nearest Supercharger station.
These NACS DC adapters will be available to US customers first, with Canadian EV owners having to wait until later this year. Going forward, GM vehicles will come with NACS DC adapters, meaning future owners won’t have to pay $225 for the charging capability. The company is working with multiple sources to provide enough adapters so that all GM EV owners can power their vehicles.
Earlier this year, Tesla began allowing its vehicles to be charged at Superchargers. Other major U.S. automakers made similar announcements last year. GM Tesla may not be able to release the adapter because it laid off its Supercharger team in April. Forbes.
