Nadhim Zahawi faces dismissal after ordering an official inquiry into whether Rishi Sunak violated a ministerial order by failing to settle taxes.
The prime minister didn’t know until the weekend that the Conservative chairman had paid HMRC millions to settle a disputed tax bill. Me I understand.
After concluding that Mr Zahawi’s first public account had raised new questions about his financial problems, he asked his adviser to the Minister’s Interests to launch an investigation.
After deciding that it would be wrong to take action against Mr. Zahawi without formal formalities, Mr. Snack brought in Sir Laurie Magnus. The source said, “He shouldn’t be a judge or a juror just by sniffing.
If violations of ministerial ordinances are discovered, resignation is almost certain. But his supporters believe the Tory Speaker is ready to keep his job.
Under the ministerial law, all ministers must declare the details of their financial arrangements, and Zahawi will do so as prime minister and in his role under Sunak, Whitehall insiders said. Said it was necessary.
But the prime minister was not informed of the details of the tax matter at any point before they were made public, and was ignorant of the whole truth when he publicly endorsed Mr Zahawi last week. A cabinet office official told Sunak only that there were no ongoing issues that would make the minister unfit for the post.
Mr Zahawi has admitted he made the mistake of saying his taxes were “needless and unintentional” and paid HMRC an estimated £5 million. The controversy related to shares in the company was resolved last summer when he was Secretary of the Treasury.
“Therefore, the Independent Advisor has been asked to thoroughly investigate this matter and provide me with advice on compliance with Nadim Zahawi’s Ministerial Decree, on which basis he will determine the appropriate next steps.”
In a statement, Zahawi said: I look forward to explaining the facts of this matter to Sir Laurie Magnus and his team.
“I am confident that I have acted appropriately throughout and look forward to answering any specific questions on a formal occasion to Lord Raleigh. Please understand that it is inappropriate to discuss this matter further in order to continue my duties as chairman of the Unity Party.”
Labor has argued that removing Zahawi is the only way to restore “integrity, professionalism and accountability” to the government.
Labor Deputy Leader Angela Rayner told the House of Commons: It may be silly to say that no one thought it would happen. “
She added: How can the prime minister claim to deliver the integrity, professionalism and accountability promised while the Conservative chairman is still in the cabinet? “
In response, Cabinet Office Minister Jeremy Quinn said it would be wrong to preempt an investigation by Mr. Sunak’s independent adviser. he said: Of course.
Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon also invited Zahawy to go. The Prime Minister of Scotland said: I think someone who is a government minister is in that position, but I think their position is untenable. “
