Cryptocurrency mining is the process of creating digital currencies like Bitcoin. Transactions are verified on a decentralized digital network called blockchain. Rather than relying on central authorities such as banks to manage transactions, blockchain uses a distributed network of computers to verify and maintain a secure and transparent record of every transaction. The mining process requires computers to solve complex mathematical problems using special hardware and software. Miners race to solve these problems, and the first miner to find a solution receives new cryptocurrencies and transaction fees from verified transactions.
The problem with the environment and the Cohasset school system (in this case) is that mining requires a lot of computational power. This means high power usage which generates a lot of heat. Miners on board have to invest in specialized equipment and pay those high electricity bills.
