If you know you’ll need one or more of your next big ticket items in the next year or so, budget to make all your purchases within a year to get the most out of your Costco membership. It might make sense to plan. Prices start at $60.
You can also consider a paid membership if you plan to make any of the following seven purchases over the next year.
After you’ve covered your membership dues with one or more major purchases, stock up on smaller items to use this year and next, such as gift cards and movie passes, to maximize your savings in the year you purchased your membership.
1. Electronics
A friend saved $200 on a computer compared to all other options. The same applies to televisions and other electronic devices. Obviously, you have to shop around. Costco also extends the manufacturer’s warranty to his two years on electronics, TVs, and major appliances.
2. Tires
I was able to get the dealer to quote the lowest price I could find in a suburban store. Still, Costco only went up a few bucks, so you should always choose Costco when shopping for tires.
3. Glasses and contact lenses
Costco’s optical division is highly rated by Consumer Reports. When I got new glasses a few years ago, I saved $300 compared to other options I looked at. They also got the lenses wrong (had to be remade) and gave me a $50 cash card for my problem. Another friend joins Costco just to save money on contact lenses, saving the annual fee.
4. Carpet and flooring
One Living on the Cheap editor says Costco’s prices for carpeting her home are cheaper than anywhere in town, even before she receives additional Costco rebates based on top-tier membership. Costco works with local carpet and flooring stores to provide products and installation.
5. Furniture
I searched everywhere for an affordable leather ottoman with storage. All other options were $1,000. Costco was $275 including tax and shipping. The first one arrived with a damaged box, so I sent it back (I emailed the prepaid label). They sent me another one and he gave me a $25 credit for my problem (I tried him for $50).
6. Party
If you have an anniversary or graduation party coming up, if you’re cooking for a large crowd, or especially if you’re cooking steak, you’ll find that the bulk quantities sold at Costco are very good. Sho (they sell prime beef you can’t get. Grocery stores) and seafood. Julia Child bought meat at Costco.
7. Wine and beer
Costco is the largest supplier of fine wines in the United States. Stock availability fluctuates, but you can get great deals. A friend who is a beer lover told me that the beer prices and selection are also excellent. Again, if you have a big party coming up, it might make sense to buy lots of Costco booze.
