Sue Gray faces scrutiny over whether she will be allowed to join Labor as Sir Kiel Sturmer’s chief of staff after secret talks with the opposition when she was a senior civil servant .
Supporters of Boris Johnson and Conservative MPs accused Ms Gray of undermining the integrity of her own report to Partygate by taking the Labor office.
Mr Gray, who has spent decades as a civil servant, resigned on Thursday shortly after news of his meeting with Lord Kiel leaked.
She is currently applying to the oversight body, which oversees jobs taken by former cabinet ministers and senior officials, for permission to take her new role. It is unknown whether it has the power to completely stop it.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet Office has launched an investigation into the circumstances of her unexpected resignation, following concerns that none of her managers have been informed of the impending replacement.
A spokesperson said: This was immediately approved by the Undersecretary of the Ministry and the Chief Cabinet Secretary. I will not comment further on individual personnel matters. We are investigating the circumstances that led to his resignation.”

In a statement, the Labor Party said: “Labour has proposed Sue Gray for the role of Chief of Staff to the Leader of the Opposition. We understand that she wishes to accept the role following normal procedures. , we are pleased that you want us to join you in preparing your government and in our mission to build a better Britain.”
