People use abbreviations to save writing time, but sometimes these verbal shortcuts waste the reader’s time by forcing them to look up the meaning.
New research from social media education company sociability analyzed Google searches for common Internet abbreviations and found the most puzzling ones. To do this important work, they calculated the number of searches for each independent acronym combined with search terms such as “meaning of the acronym,” “meaning of the acronym,” and “abbreviation of the acronym.” Analyzed.
Results: SMH caused the most head scratching, or head shaking.
SMH (“head shake”) is often used in chats, text messages, and other forums when someone is disappointed or annoyed with a conversation, situation, or other person. The official definition by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary states that SMH is “used to inflict embarrassment and distrust.”
The phrase is often accompanied or replaced by an emoji of palms on the face. Variations of SMH include “Head Scratching” and his SMDH (“Head Shaking”), which is not intended for children.
The study found that SMH causes an average of 802,858 searches per month, or 9.6 million searches per year.

Top 10 Most Confusing Acronyms
Right behind SMH in the list of most confusing acronyms is “TBH”, with 306,085 monthly searches across the United States. TBH stands for “Be Honest” and is commonly used to describe candor and honesty.
The third most searched acronym is POV, which is Googled about 284,475 times each month in the United States. Content creators have long used the term to describe the “point of view” of a camera. POV videos are shot from the point of view of a first-person viewer.
However, on TikTok and other social media platforms, POV is used by some creators to refer to skits centered on people in uncomfortable or awkward situations. Examples include emergency medical treatment or an unfortunate encounter at prom.
