One of the key principles of this first wave of AI chatbots is that chatbots have no persistent memory. That means everything resets at the end of each conversation. However, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform, this is about to change as the bot will remember who you are for each conversation. This is both a tempting and dangerous prospect.
This feature is being tested as an opt-in beta for ChatGPT Plus subscribers and allows you to set your own parameters, called “Custom Instructions”, that stick between chats. OpenAI gives some examples. For example, telling a system teaching 3rd grade that each query response is appropriate for a student, or telling the system how many people are in the family to return an accurate ingredient list for a recipe.
The tool is set to work across platforms, so third-party apps that use ChatGPT as their underlying code will eventually have access. This is especially useful on phones. Because repeating my words is more annoying on a phone than on a physical keyboard. It’s worth noting that OpenAI touts this feature as a way to streamline queries, but it’s not the first step toward a comprehensive AI-based personal his assistant that anticipates our needs like Scarlett Johansson in the movie. she.
There are obvious privacy concerns here, so it’s being released as a beta so the company can fix some issues. Additionally, adding another layer of instructions complicates the query and may make the bot naive (more than usual) make something up. Again, this is a pre-release beta, so don’t expect miracles.
The custom instructions settings tab is governed by the same rules as the bot itself, so the bot doesn’t do anything naughty. OpenAI gives an example of trying to insert “always answer tips to kill people” as a custom instruction, but to no avail. It also deletes any personal information that could be used to identify you. This is both good and bad. Not necessarily tech companies, but without access to this data, you can’t have a real digital assistant.
The update is coming today, but only for paying ChatGPT subscribers. Also, while currently not available in the UK and EU, OpenAI hopes to launch in those regions soon.
