Rishi Sunak will scrutinize many of the government’s policy pledges to reach net zero to avoid burdening consumers with additional costs.
Downing Street argues that while the prime minister remains committed to the goal of reaching net zero by 2050, including spearheading a ban on gasoline and diesel by 2030, a significant portion of the government’s plans may be scrapped to protect households from rising costs.
This came days after the Conservatives held Uxbridge and West Ruislip against low emissions in last week’s by-election.
The 10th said the government would consider a net zero policy and see if it was “reasonable and realistic”.
The prime minister’s official spokesman said: “As we move forward with these promises, it is right for us to listen to consumers and businesses and understand their concerns.
“These are long-term tackling issues that have been around for years.
“There has been no formal review,” a senior government official said, arguing that while certain policy commitments would be honored, others could be withdrawn to protect households from the higher costs of greener policies.
