AI has permeated scientific research papers, and there are several quotes that suggest scientists may have gotten help writing them from ChatGPT.
new Stanford University research According to an article published on arXiv, since the introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, November 2022researchers are steadily increasing the frequency with which they use AI to assist with academic writing.
In the first large-scale review of how AI has impacted academic publications, researchers at Stanford University found that from January 2020 to February 2024, approximately We analyzed 1 million articles.
They looked for specific words that AI tends to overuse, words that have exploded in popularity since the launch of ChatGPT: domain, complex, salient, and extremely important.

Their findings, published in April, revealed that the use of AI has increased by 6.3% to 17.5% over time.
The fastest growing category was computer science, with summaries and prefaces containing words commonly used in AI rising to 17.5% and 15.3%, respectively, by February 2024.

The researchers suggested that computer science may have grown the fastest because academics in that sector were familiar with ChatGPT and had easy access to AI models.

This isn’t just the Stanford study. Dr. Jeremy NguyenThe senior researcher and lecturer at Australia’s Swinburne Business School shared research specific to medical writing that shows the potential for increased AI writing.
Nguyen searched All PubMed articles published in the last 34 years about “delve”, another common word used in ChatGPT.
He found a noticeable increase in research papers using the word, suggesting that AI was being used to write those papers.
