After OpenAI announced its latest ChatGPT iteration, one tech executive is probably feeling pretty jealous: Apple’s Tim Cook.
ChatGPT-4o (as they call it) speaks empathetically and conversationally, without having to use precise commands like “wake word” or “Hey Siri!” Just like Apple’s Assistant.
While Siri and Amazon’s Alexa are in neutral mode, the much talked about ChatGPT has taken another step forward.
On Monday, Open AI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati showed off new voice modes for ChatGPT-4o, a voice chat assistant.
They should be able to interact naturally with you. (To be fair, though, I’ve only seen parts of ChatGPT-4o in a highly controlled public demo, so I’m not sure what it’s actually like. You’ll have to check it out IRL.)
The comparison to the female voice assistant in the movie “Her” was so obvious that even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweeted about it.
The voice chat assistant has a female voice (it’s unclear if there’s an option to change this) and can speak with emotion, feigning excitement, friendliness, or even sarcasm.
Meanwhile, Apple executives must be jealous. last week, The New York Times reported After testing ChatGPT last year, top Apple executives reportedly ordered major improvements to Apple’s Siri.
Siri has been around for over a decade and is useful for many tasks, but its functionality is very limited. You have to say “Hey, Siri” to wake it up, and it can’t handle naturally flowing conversations. If you’ve ever used Siri, you know how often Siri doesn’t understand what you say or can’t actually complete a command.
Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa, has similar issues. I use Alexa at home to check the weather and play music. But when I started playing around with generative AI chatbots, I couldn’t help but notice: fool In comparison, Alexa feels unable to do simple things like play specific albums on Spotify, not just artist playlists.
OpenAI has clearly created a voice assistant chatbot that’s much more advanced than Siri today, and Tim Cook must be sweating a little.
But Apple still has a big advantage every time it revamps its AI and updates Siri. Siri is already the iPhone’s voice assistant, and that’s a big deal.
