Rishi Sunak intends to present himself as the best leader to lead Britain through its “most dangerous but most transformative period” ever.
In a pre-election pitch described by Downing Street as a “major speech”, the prime minister will outline the “tough choices facing the British people” in the run-up to a general election later this year.
His comments follow the Conservative Party’s disastrous defeat in recent local elections, in which it lost 470 councilors, and the crucial West Midlands mayoral race.
The recent defection of two prominent Conservative MPs, Natalie Elphicke and Dan Poulter, to Labor within two weeks has also dealt a major blow to the party.
And the latest YouGov poll, conducted last week, showed the party trailing Labor by 30 points, its worst position since Liz Truss’ short-lived premiership.
Foreign Secretary Cameron said on Sunday that the autumn election would give voters time to “see whether our economic plan is working”.

The time for the prime minister’s speech has not yet been set, but it is expected to take place this morning. We will update this story once this is confirmed.
How can I watch the speech live?

What would Rishi Sunak say?
Mr Sunak is expected to focus on keeping the country safe from war and the rise in global migration.
He would say: “There is a deep sense of urgency because there will be more change in the next five years than in the past 30 years.
“I am confident that the next few years will be the most dangerous and transformative times our country has ever seen.”
The Prime Minister added that he had “bold ideas” that could “create a safer future” for Britons and restore “confidence and pride in our country”.
He would go on to say: “Our country is at a crossroads.
“In the coming years, nearly every aspect of our lives will change, from democracy to economics and society to the most difficult issues of war and peace.
“How we act in the face of these changes, not only to keep people safe and secure, but also to realize the opportunities, will determine whether the UK succeeds in the years ahead. Masu.
“And this is the choice this country faces.”
Labour’s national campaign co-ordinator Pat McFadden said: “No matter what the Prime Minister says, it doesn’t change the fact that the Conservative Party has wrought costly chaos on this country for the past 14 years. It will remain memorable. “It is the only parliament where the standards of the people are upheld.” At the end of life, life will be worth less than it was at the beginning. ”
