With energy becoming the main battleground in the election, Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer are set to promise lower gas and electricity prices for voters.
Ofgem is due to announce a cut to the energy price cap on Friday, with both the Conservatives and Labour arguing that householders will be better off under their government.
The Conservatives said they would maintain energy price caps every year in the next parliament, improve customer service to help consumers find cheaper energy tariffs and promote competition.
During his visit to Scotland, Starmer will promise that household energy bills will fall “forever” under his government thanks to the creation of Great British Energy, a new energy generation company he has previously promised to set up to invest in clean electricity.
The Labour leader will also tell Scottish voters that by choosing his party on July 4 they will be sending a Labour government to Westminster.
Analysis by Cornwall Insight predicts that the energy price cap for a typical household on a default tariff will be cut by 7% for the three months from July.
The Conservatives have promised a “new deal with energy suppliers” that will help consumers find the cheapest deals with the help of price comparison websites.
The Conservative government will also work with Ofgem to create a league table of energy companies based on customer complaints, waiting times and responsiveness.
Energy Minister Claire Coutinho said: “Labour has not been serious about Britain’s energy security and has not been honest about the cost their reckless net zero target will have on households.”
“Thanks to our bold action, energy bills are at their lowest in two years. Now we’re telling suppliers to put consumers first and bring real competition back to the market – that means reducing bills further and improving customer service.”
“Only the Conservatives have a clear plan for a safe net zero future without hitting families with extra costs.”
But ahead of Starmer’s campaign visit to Scotland with Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, the party said consumers would be paying £400 more for their electricity than they were in 2021. Ofgem is expected to announce that the typical household’s energy bill will be £1,574.
Starmer will also say that “politics needs a new sensibility” and that Scottish voters have the opportunity to “end 14 years of Conservative rule and a failed SNP and chart a new course for the country”.
Great British Energy will be a new public electricity company that will invest in clean energy to reduce bills and improve energy security.
The Labour leader will say: “After 14 years of Tory chaos, people across Scotland are desperate for change. Families have been paying the price of 14 years of Conservative energy failure and are set to continue losing a staggering £400 a year under the new price cap.”
“We can’t just send a message in this election. We have to send a government. But we can’t do that without rebuilding trust and charting a new course for the country.”
“Labour is humbled and seeks the opportunity to change the country – to serve the whole country. Let us be clear: there will be no national renewal without a strong Scotland. There will be no Labour party without Scotland. There will be no change in the UK without Scotland.”
Responding to the Conservative energy pledges, a Labour spokesman said: “After 14 years of failed Conservative energy policy, all Rishi Sunak can offer is a bunch of empty buzzwords that will do nothing to lower energy bills for hard-working families.”
“This is not a plan – it’s a presentation of evidence, a series of options, two consultations, copy-pasted old letters and a lot of wishful thinking. The grand vision of a Conservative party that has been in power for 14 years is to ask people if their energy bills are too high.”
