Jeremy Corbyn has announced that he will stand as an independent candidate in the general election.
The former Labour leader will stand in his own constituency of Islington North and said he would pledge to be an “independent voice for equality, democracy and peace”.
Corbyn has been suspended from the Labour party since 2020 after refusing to fully accept the findings of the Equality and Human Rights Commission which found the party breached equality law during his time as leader, and saying anti-Semitism had been “grossly exaggerated for political reasons”.
Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak and other Conservative leaders sparked the campaign’s first major controversy by accusing Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer of “weak spirit” after challenging him to a record six televised debates.
A source close to the Prime Minister said she wanted to debate Mr Starmer once a week during the election – which would bring the total to six live debates, a record since televised debates were first introduced in 2010.
