As if the wave of overwhelmingly negative reviews wasn’t enough, Humane appears to have discovered yet another major issue with its once-highly touted AI Pin, with the company warning customers not to use the device’s charging case due to a potential “fire safety risk.”
In an email to AI Pin owners, Humane said it had received reports of “charging issues” linked to “quality issues with battery cells supplied by a third-party vendor used in the charging case accessory.” Humane did not specifically say whether the unspecified “charging issue” actually caused the fire, but said its investigation found that “certain battery cells supplied by this vendor may pose a fire safety risk.”
Humane has not yet used the word “recall,” but is urging people to immediately stop using the charging case. Other charging accessories, such as the battery booster and charging pad, are apparently safe because their batteries come from a different supplier. We reached out to Humane for more information and whether they plan to refund or replace the $149 accessory for people who have already purchased it. In the meantime, the company is offering customers two months of its subscription service for free.
The full email is as follows:
We’re contacting you today to ask that you immediately stop using and charging your charging case accessories out of an abundance of caution due to an issue with certain battery cells in our charging case accessories.
We received one report of charging issues when using a third-party USB-C cable and a third-party power source, and discovered a quality issue with the battery cells supplied by our third-party vendor used in our charging case accessory.
“Our investigation determined that the battery supplier did not meet our quality standards and that certain battery cells supplied by this vendor may pose a fire safety risk. As a result, we have immediately disqualified this battery vendor and are working to select a new vendor to avoid these issues and maintain our high quality standards.
The issues identified are limited only to the specific battery cells used in the Charging Case Accessory and are not related to the hardware design of the Charging Case Accessory.
Importantly, because the disqualified vendors do not supply batteries or other components for these Humane products, Humane’s Ai Pins, battery boosters and charging pads are not affected and remain safe to use.
