Defence is the first and most important duty of any government. Eighty years ago today, British troops made extraordinary sacrifices to protect our freedom and democracy. So it is fitting that we all take a moment to remember our debt to these heroes, and to recognise that we should never take for granted the peace we have enjoyed in recent decades.
We live in a more volatile and uncertain world than ever before. Putin has brought war back to Europe. British ships are under attack by Iranian proxies in the Red Sea. China is launching one cyber attack after another against our institutions, companies and individuals.
“It is essential that we continue to recruit new soldiers to strengthen our national security and keep our people safe. But we must also work to look after our soldiers after they leave and ensure that the UK is the best country in the world for veterans. Only the Conservatives have a plan to give our veterans the support and opportunities they deserve.
I know from personal experience that the decision to risk one’s life for country is not one that anyone takes lightly. When Soldiers have the confidence that the unique skills and talents they gain from their military experience are viewed as strengths, it helps those who serve us know that we care.
Since 2010, our work has been focused on making the UK the best country in the world to live in for veterans. Thanks to our efforts and the work we’ve done through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, the number of veterans in employment is now above the UK average, and thousands more are receiving vital support for the challenges they face – showing them that service is a strength.
If elected, we will continue to work hard on our plan to create the best conditions in the world for veterans. We will commit to putting veterans’ rights into law forever. We will make sure their needs and concerns are heard at the highest levels of government. From cutting rail fares to supporting people who need mobility with our £3 million Veterans Mobility Fund, we are changing what it means to be a veteran in the UK. By encouraging employers to hire veterans, veteran employment rates have reached record levels and are rising.
The choice people have in this election is clear: between Sir Keir Starmer and his Shadow Cabinet, who fail to deliver on our defence promises and refuse to stop the legal attacks on our veterans, or the only Conservative party with a proven track record of taking tough decisions to protect our national security and doing the utmost to support our veterans.
As our enemies seek to flex their muscles, we cannot afford to doubt our resolve. Only the Conservative Party has a plan for a safer future for our children and grandchildren.
