iPhones are getting a new feature that will make text messaging more similar to email and Slack.
At its annual WWDC event on Monday, Apple announced that its iOS 18 update will include the ability to schedule text messages to be sent later. This is one of the “most requested features” and is useful for sending reminders or making sure you remember to wish a friend a happy birthday, said Ronak Shah, Apple’s director of Internet Technology product marketing.
Other new features being added to iMessage include text formatting like bold, italics, strikethrough, underline, etc. Apple is also adding tapback emoji and stickers that can be used to react to messages.
Tapbacks are “one of the most popular ways to express yourself through messaging,” Shah said.
The emoji and sticker tapbacks go beyond the existing ones that only include thumbs up and down, hearts, laughing, exclamation marks, and question marks – but these will all be redesigned.
New text effects like Shake and Bloom are also available to help you jazz up your messages. Some are automatically suggested based on your message, but you can also add custom effects to any text.
