Apple is going all-in on AI in as Apple-like a way as possible. At WWDC, Apple’s annual developer conference, the company unveiled Apple Intelligence, its Apple-branded version of AI, which focuses on injecting technology into the company’s software and upgrading existing apps to make them more useful. According to Apple’s announcement, Apple Intelligence will be powered by both Apple’s in-house developed technology and a partnership with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT.
One of Apple’s biggest AI upgrades is coming to Siri. The company’s built-in voice assistant will now be powered by large-scale language models, the technology that underpins all modern generative AI. Siri, which has been sluggish for years, may become more useful as it will be able to work more closely with Apple’s OS and apps. For example, you can ask Siri for a summary of a news article, delete an email, or edit a photo. The assistant will also be able to perform over 100 actions, such as finding a photo by giving a rough description of what it contains, or extracting personal information from a photo of your ID to auto-fill online forms. Finally, you’ll be able to type questions to Siri instead of using your voice.
Apple Intelligence will be able to quickly summarize web pages in Safari, a feature already available in competing web browsers like Arc. You can also use Apple Intelligence to quickly catch up on important notifications, and your device will be able to compose detailed replies to emails and text messages on your behalf, just like Gmail and Outlook do. Apple also announced a set of new features called Writing Tools that use AI across the system to write, rewrite, proofread and summarize text. This is useful for drafting emails or blog posts, for example.
Apple Intelligence uses AI to record, transcribe, and summarize calls, rivaling third-party transcription services like Otter. All participants are automatically notified when you start a recording, and a transcript of the key points of the conversation is automatically generated at the end. It also uses AI to generate images, stickers, and custom emojis (which Apple calls Genmoji) in any app.
Apple has partnered with OpenAI to incorporate a basic version of OpenAI’s latest large-scale language model, GPT-4o, into Siri and Writing Tools. Siri can act as an intermediary for user queries to GPT-4o, and Writing Tools can use LLM to help craft text. Apple claims that requests and other identifying information, such as IP addresses, are not stored unless you connect a paid ChatGPT account to your Apple device.
Apple Intelligence will be in beta at launch, according to the company, and will be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPads and Macs with the M1 chip, and devices must be set to US English.
Apple’s AI features have been long overdue. Generative AI has been shaking up Silicon Valley ever since OpenAI released ChatGPT around the end of 2022. Since then, Apple’s rivals such as Google, Samsung, Microsoft and companies such as Meta have been racing to integrate AI features into all their major products. Last month, Google announced that AI will be the basis of the next Android and made major AI-powered changes to its search engine. Apple’s main smartphone rival, Samsung, added AI features to its smartphones earlier this year that can translate calls in real time and edit photos. Microsoft also unveiled its AI-powered Copilot PC, which aims to bring AI features such as live captioning, image editing and system-wide search enhancements to Windows.
