Perhaps he’s sending a different message now: The man who bought Twitter, turned it into “X” and saw advertising revenues plummet is heading to France next week for the Cannes Lions advertising summit.
It won’t be a tough interrogation this time: The release reads: “The interview will cover the transformative power of technological innovation, how AI is transforming creativity, business and society, and the future of X.” It’s unclear whether Musk will attend in person or join via video, as he did recently at a tech conference in Paris.
Cannes is the advertising industry’s biggest event of the year, and it’s common for big tech companies to exhibit there in an attempt to attract advertisers.
Musk’s appearance is primarily newsworthy I didn’t go last year And he has largely avoided advertising gatherings in general. (Linda Yaccarino, the former NBC sales chief who became Mr. Musk’s CEO a year ago, is also scheduled to appear in Cannes this month.)
Related: Many advertisers have shunned Twitter/X since it acquired the company in fall 2022.Musk’s relationship with advertisers remains pretty… strained. Last fall, he famously told advertisers to “fuck off” after they cut ties with his company, and accused them of trying to “blackmail” him.
Musk keeps predicting the future of Twitter/X The company will be less reliant on advertising dollars, as it will make a lot of money from subscriptions and other sources.
But alternative funding hasn’t emerged in any meaningful amount and advertisers remain very wary of Musk, so he’s heading to France.I will be joining them along with my colleagues from Business Insider. Please come and say hello!
