PCMag honored with 2023 ‘Editors’ Choice’ honors: Avast One EssentialReceived an “outstanding” overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 from PCMag.
PCMag Lead Security Analyst Neil J. Rubenking said of the rankings:
“Avast has provided antivirus protection for as long as the antivirus industry has existed…all four independent test labs we follow include Avast in their reports, and nearly all tests It’s excellent, and it scores well in our own hands-on tests.”
AVG Antivirus Free and Bitdefender Antivirus Free for Windows Each received 4 points out of 5 and was named “excellent”, tying for second place.Rounding out the top five is Avira Free Security and Microsoft Defender Antiviruseach with a 3.5 “good” rating out of 5.
Missing from this year’s list is Kaspersky Free, which tied for the top spot in last year’s ranking. PCMag notes that Kaspersky’s Russian origins and the war in Ukraine have forced many governments and organizations to cut ties with the business. The FCC has even said Kaspersky is a national security threat, and as a result PCMag no longer endorses the product.
Should I pay for antivirus protection?
Paid antivirus programs offer better protection than free versions, according to PCMag. In addition, technical support may be limited for users of free programs.
Whether or not you should pay for antivirus protection depends on your budget. If paid programs aren’t in your budget, try a few free programs and see which one you like best.
One exception is business computers. PCMag points out that free antivirus programs are often free only for non-commercial use, that is, for use on personal computers.
