Now that America’s largest movie theater chain has started charging ticket prices based on seat location, it’s time to think about ways to save money on movies.
Seriously, folks, AMC Theaters’ new pricing policy is pissing a lot of people off. Actor Elijah Wood, for example, said it would hurt low-income moviegoers. “Cinema has always been a sacred, democratic space for all,” said Frodo.
Still, in all AMC theaters by the end of the year, front seats are cheaper and the best seats in the middle are more expensive.
That’s another way for them to gouge you if you ask us.
Luckily, we have some ideas on how to save a buck or two on movies. Check out our list of 16 ways to keep your theater expenses down.
1. Go to a matinee
Get up to 30% off ticket prices when you go to a matinee, but be aware of the theater’s definition of a “matinee.”
Most theaters used to call shows before 4pm matinees, but some now charge an evening fee for all shows starting after 3pm.
2. Go to the prematinee
Some theaters offer even better deals on very early films, or “pre-matinees.”
That term usually applies to films that start before noon.

These regular seats will continue to be available at their current prices. Seats in the front row are “value seats” and are cheaper than regular seats.
