The time we spend in one home seems a little less, but it’s still much more than it used to be. For example, in 2005, a homeowner spent an average of only 6.5 years at her one location.
In some areas, residents actually tend to crouch down and settle in. Below are five places where homeowners stay in their place the longest.
5. Memphis, Tennessee
Average tenure of homeowners in this metropolitan area: 16.2 years
Memphis is home to the blues, but the homeowners seem to be hilarious about their homes. Even Elvis Presley rests in this house forever.
The amount of time Memphis residents spend in one place has been steadily increasing since at least 2012, according to Redfin.
4. San Francisco
Average tenure of homeowners in this metropolitan area: 16.3 years
California homeowners as a group tend to stay in their locations longer than people in other states. In a summary of its findings, Redfin says there is a simple explanation for that fact.
“People have been holding onto their homes particularly long in California. San Diego and Riverside also have longer average tenures than the national average, largely because state tax laws force homeowners to stay home. California’s Proposition 13 LIMITS HIGHER PROPERTY TAXES.”
3. Cleveland
Average tenure of homeowners in this metropolitan area: 17.1 years
Cleveland is Origin of Supermanand the city’s residents remain very loyal to the homes in which they live.
Clark Kent speculates that homeowners here will acknowledge the fact that roots last on average nearly 20 years.
2. San Jose, California
Average tenure of homeowners in this metropolitan area: 17.3 years
Like other California cities, San Jose residents tend to stay for tax reasons.
A cooling housing market is also likely to retain more residents in the near future. San Jose is one of the “10 Home Markets Home Sellers Are Giving Up”.
1. Los Angeles
Average tenure of homeowners in this metropolitan area: 18.2 years old
Los Angeles doesn’t exactly conjure up the image of ‘stable’. After all, this is where people come and go in search of fame and fortune.
Despite its reputation, residents have remained extremely loyal to the home, landing the City of Angels at the top of this list.
