Agility Robotics today announced an updated version of its bipedal Digits warehouse robot. Designed to take on repetitive or injury-risk tasks, the new version adds a head (with LED-animated eyes) and hands to handle a wider variety of demanding workloads than its predecessor. increase.
The new Digits robot can “reach higher, carry more, last longer, recharge faster and convey intent” than its predecessor. In addition, they are excellent at manipulating their surroundings, have keen perceptions, and are good at human-robot interaction. The machine is 5’9 inches tall and weighs about 140 pounds, and is newly designed to reach both high and low spaces and help lift and place plastic totes and other objects found in shipping warehouses. Includes a modified “end effector” (hand).
“Warehouse operations involve many process-automated repetitive tasks that often lead to injuries and high turnover, creating a costly workforce gap that disrupts the supply chain,” the company said. explains in a press release: “Automation can help fill these gaps, but existing automation solutions are typically single-purpose, meaning companies have dozens of different solutions for different tasks. or require expensive customizations to the workspace.” The idea is that humanoid robots can best replicate the tasks normally assigned to humans.
Automation relieves human workers of the most demanding tasks, but they are not always so orderly. Machines could completely eliminate human work. Moreover, robots will come at a time when wealth inequality is already astronomically high and the world’s largest companies are laying off thousands of employees. You can’t help but look at these machines with as much cynicism as awe.
Agility Robotics will have a fully autonomous live demo of Digits at: Promat Chicago This week (March 20-23). The company also accepts applications for spots in the Agility Partner Program (APP) and is the only place where you can buy your spot first. Pricing has not yet been announced and the first units are expected to ship to his APP participants in early 2024. The company is aiming for his 2025 general availability.
